SENIOR GETTAWAY CLUB
Nottingham MENCAP
Senior Gettaway Club
help people with a learning disability take part in leisure, social and creative activities in the
community, and provide opportunities for personal development.
The Senior Gettaway Club helps to give people with a learning disability the chance to speak
up for themselves and have a say in the running of the club with the help of a member
representatives.
The clubs provide an opportunity for
adults with a learning disability the chance to socially
interact with friends in a warm friendly environment. The entertainment is chosen by the
Gettaway leaders at the beginning of the year, to provide a variety of different games, and
give the club nights a strong structure to run to.
We offer twice weekly evening clubs, on a Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 7pm to 9pm.
Each night we offer a variety of activities,
games in the main hall, an arts and craft room, to
the
TV and Pool room.  With a tea/ coffee break and tuckshop throughout the night.  With
the evenings ending with
music and dancing.
The Gettaway Club leaders also organise themed discos on Saturday Nights throughout the
year, and hold two/three
day outings during the year taking a 52 seater coach to various UK
locations.
The Senior Gettaway Club hold regular management committee meetings with member
representatives, and volunteer meetings to ensure the smooth running of the club.
The clubs are run by the Club Leader and Deputy Club Leader supported by volunteers, who
encourage members to involve themselves in activities.

A Big Thank You

As a consequence of the generosity of
the Vale of Belvoir Rotary Club,
the lounge at Harpenden House, which is
the main location for many activities

and the quiet room for the
Senior Gettaway Club,
has been completely refurbished with new
furniture and carpet.
The Senior Gettaway Club is very
appreciative of this gesture as one of their
members,
Wendy Downing, is the daughter
of
Doug Downing, the president of the
Rotary Club,
and has been very involved in
the selection of the furniture.
The official opening was on Tuesday 17th November at 8.30pm, and was
celebrated with some of the rotary members and the Nottingham Mencap
chairman, Ian Smellie.
This year just under 20 volunteers attended the
'Christmas' meal, held in February,  at the Flying Horse
Pub in Arnold.  A great time was had by all, with the
Tuesday and Wednesday night volunteers meeting
together and enjoying a night out.
The Volunteers Annual 'Christmas' Meal
The evening was rounded off with a 'fun raffle' with
everyone getting a token gift from the club to show our
appreciation of the volunteers giving up their time to
attend the clubs, and for helping make the clubs the
success they are today.
Joan George was also presented with a bouquet of
flowers by the chairperson as a token of appreciation
for the hard work she has put into the club over the
years.
