Learning Zone

This is a relaxed and responsive
environment for adults with a learning
disability, designed to improve confidence
and self-esteem by undertaking individually
designed literacy and numeracy
programmes.

The Learning Zone was initially designed by
Nottingham Mencaps' training department
to underpin basic literacy and numeracy
skills while studying for accredited
vocational qualifications and it has grown
to accommodate the learners' needs. It
offers a wide choice of options to meet the
needs of the individual.

For each student we carry out a individual
assessment, either computer or paper
based, which provides precise information
on a student's level of competence to
enable us to draw up an individual learning
plan.

There are many resources available for
individual small group work.

There is no cost involved for training. Travel
costs are reimbursed for public transport
and taxis by prior agreement. Subsidised
meals are also available within Nottingham
Mencaps' café.

If students wish to progress into
employment, the Learning Zone will
continue to provide the support necessary
to make this possible. However, the
primary purpose of the Learning Zone is to
encourage individual development and
develop confidence from achievements in
literacy, language and numeracy.

Students are encouraged to study for Open
College Network units with the North East
Midlands Board known as OCNEMR.
