Smile No Bullying started in 2003.  People said something needed
to be done to tackle bullying.

Smile No Bullying is about giving people confidence to speak up
about bullying; it is about being equal and a part of the community

Smile No Bullying helps set up groups where people can

  • Talk about bullying issues

  • Understand what bullying is and access support

  • make friends and feel good about themselves

Smile No Bullying runs training workshops for staff who can
support people with learning disabilities so they can

  • Identify bullying when it happens

  • Think about how to change the things that might make
    bullying more likely to happen

  • Set up Anti-Bullying Policies

We will be going into schools to talk to children so that children can:

  • Understand that we are all different and that being different
    is a good thing!

  • Meet people with learning disabilities

  • know what to do if they see somebody being bullied

Smile No Bullying works with
Nottinghamshire Police to tackle Hate Crime
and harassment towards people with learning
disabilities and to help people understand that
the Police take bullying seriously, and that
they can report it on their phone line
(0800
085 8522)

In the future we will be working with
residents' groups to think about bullying in
their local area.

SMILE NO BULLYING

Ms George Smith, Deputy Head at Killisick School said;
'The children and staff at Killisick Junior had the chance to hear
real-life stories from the members of 'Smile No Bullying'.  The stories
and role plays gave the children an insight into how lives are
affected by bullying, how to stop being bullied and how to stop
others being bullied. The children thought the visitors were very
brave to talk about their own experiences and thoroughly enjoyed
the assembly.  Killisick staff were impressed by how engaging the
assembly was, and Killisick School would love to work with
Nottingham Mencap again, as a way to stop bullying in school and
the community.

Smile No Bullying delivered a KS2 assembly at Killisick Junior School
on the 13th October, we talked to the children about bullying
towards people with learning disabilities, we told them different
kinds of bullying, how it makes you feel and how they could respond
to bullying and ask for help.  Roger attended the assembly and
talked to the children about his experiences, Evergreens 'Positive
Images' drama group also came along to deliver a short piece of
drama to the children around 'bullying'.  We all really enjoyed the
assembly and felt that we delivered a powerful message to the
children, all of the children participated and it was great.

Smile No Bullying, helps with setting up small
groups where people can talk about their own
experiences of bullying, get support and have
ideas for
Smile, No Bullying activities.

I like to think that the meetings are very
relaxed and informal, we always plan
something constructive for the first part of the
meeting, then we have a tea/coffee break
with biscuits and during the second half of the
meeting we talk about anything else that the
group would like to discuss.

We have a group which is already up and
running in the City, and is forever growing,
this meeting takes place monthly at the
Duncan Macmillan Involvement Centre in
Mapperley.

In the New Year there will be a new meeting
in the North of the County at the Rosewood
Centre in New Ollerton, their first meeting is
January 14th 2010.

I am also hoping to set up a new group in
Hucknall, and anywhere else in the City or
County that have a group of people that
would benefit for having a Smile No Bullying
meeting within their community.

If you would like more information about these
groups, or would like to attend one of the
meetings please contact me on:
